Rectangular with rounded corners, the cover centring an Imperial double-headed eagle, the interior engraved 'From H.I.M. The Czar of Russia August 1909' and with a later inscription 'Presented to Capt. H.G. Adams-Connor. Chief Constable, Isle of Wight. and left by him to his grandson, Lionel Eldred Peter Smith-Gordon. /1939.', with cabochon sapphire thumb-piece, marked inside cover and base, in a fitted brown leather case stamped in Russian and French 'A. D. Ivanov in St Petersburg'

Lot Essay

Emperor Nicholas II and his family visited the Isle of Wight on 2 August 1909, during the week of the Cowes Regatta. Arriving on the Imperial yacht Standart, the Imperial family was welcomed in grand style by King Edward VII and the Royal Navy. The visit involved meetings with several prominent government officials and ended on August 6th.
