Jaeger-Lecoultre created the ‘Reverso’ watch for British military officers in India, who had complained about mallets breaking their watch faces during games of polo. The Rolex Daytona reference 16520 debuted in 1988, and was the first to house an automatic movement — in this case, a heavily modified version of the Zenith El Primero movement. The new edition was an immediate success and came in a larger case with a sapphire crystal in stainless steel, yellow gold and, for the first time, two-tone yellow gold and steel. Made in 1991, this model features a beautiful white dial and partially black registers, with ‘Daytona’ written in red text.
