Lot Essay

Walker Evans made this photograph while recording life in the streets of Havana in May and June of 1933 for a book by Carleton Beals. The present lot was printed shortly after Evans' return to New York. It was not among the less than half of the sixty-four photographs he submitted to J.B. Lippincott, the publisher of The Crime of Cuba, that were published in the book.
