Lot Essay

It is possible that the present work was painted to celebrate a marriage between members of two patrician families, based on the two coats of arms flanking the Madonna's throne. That on the right, belonging to the Cappello family, is clearly identifiable, while the one on the left seems to be that of the Gattemelata family.
