Artist's Resale Right ("Droit de Suite"). Artist's… Read more As never before, women are forced to bear the burden of conflict. Rape and violence are used against women, as a weapon of war. Women are traumatised, forced from their homes, lose husbands and children, while having to take on the role as sole providers for their families. They are left alone and friendless, with the responsibility for rebuilding their lives after unspeakable trauma. Since 1993, Women for Women International has helped women in war-torn countries to transform their lives. We work in Afghanistan, Bosnia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan. We help some of the world's most marginalised women to move from victim to survivor, to active citizen, so they can have a brighter future, help support their families and help with the rebuilding of their countries. To date, we have helped nearly a quarter of a million women through our one year programme. This is tailored to the individual woman's needs, but can include counseling, a safe place to share experiences, training in vocational and business skills, literacy and numeracy education and access to micro-business loans. We are immensely grateful to the artists who have generously donated artworks, to Tank Magazine who have nominated us as their chosen charity and Christie's for making this auction possible. By bidding for an artwork, you will be helping women in areas of conflict to recover, be able to support their families and rebuild their lives. Alongside this auction there are two other ways of supporting Women for Women International. Firstly there are a number of other wonderful artworks to bid for in our silent auction. Please go to www.womenforwomen.org for further details. Secondly, Tank Magazine have produced a beautiful art issue to coincide with this auction. Nadja Romain, producer and curator, and Jose Martos, of Martos Gallery in New York, invited artists to contribute to an exhibition in the pages of Tank. They selected artists who would not normally be found in the pages of a fashion publication, but like the idea of showing in a magazine format rather than a gallery setting. Alongside Tank's usual print run, a limited edition of 270 magazines will be issued, each numbered and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
