Lot Essay

The present panel is based on a section of the large Kreuzberg relief (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh), in which Paolozzi has developed a similar visual language of shapes. Kreuzberg was preceded by the ceiling panels at Cleish Castle of 1972-73, which have now been removed from the castle and installed in the Dean Gallery, Edinburgh. In the early 1970s Paolozzi had discovered a German magazine illustration of 1927, showing organ music in the form of a patterned composition, which became the basis for his visual vocabulary.
