Lot Essay

In November 1992, Helmut Newton introduced an impressive selection of new work in the exhibition Archives de Nuit, at the Crédit Foncier de France, 19 place Vendôme, Paris. This show included his now-celebrated series of Domestic Nudes and a variety of unfamiliar reportage subjects - each one a perfect expression of his unique way of looking at the world.

The exhibition also introduced a striking series of Panoramic Nudes, made on an old panoramic camera that had caught Newton's attention. The pictures were made at Lake Como, two in the grounds of the Villa d'Este, two - including Woman with Gun - in the grounds of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni.
