Lot Essay

The present commode lot is vintage and produced by Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) in the 1950s. Fornasetti was a Milanese painter, sculptor, interior decorator, engraver of books and a creator of more than 11,000 products. In terms of variety of decoration, Fornasettis production of objects and furniture is one of the largest of the 20th century.
Although Palladiana is inspired by a Palladian architectural drawing, this work actually reproduces a sixteenth-century Austrian villa. The top depicts a birds-eye view of an Italian garden.

A comparable commode is illustrated in M. Casadio, B. Fornasetti and A. Branzi, Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, Rizzoli 2010, p. 372.
