Lot Essay

Painted in 1934, the sitter is Cecilia Dennis, and belongs to a series of works combining the theme of women and music, with titles such as Chromatic Fantasy, The Fugue and in particular, The Mandolinist, 1934 (Tate Gallery, London). There is also a pastel version of this subject entitled Birth of Classical Music.
