Les deux épreuves récemment trouvées dans les archives d’André Derain viennent confirmer l’intérêt que le peintre accordait au travail de Julia Margaret Cameron. Il est probable qu’André Derain ait vu des tirages de Cameron, appartenant à Gustave Doré et Victor Hugo, qui furent exposés lors de l’Exposition Universelle de 1867. Mais c’est surtout lors de son séjour à Londres en 1919, alors qu’il travaille pour les Ballets russes de Diaghilev et l’œuvre La Boutique Fantasque, qu’André Derain est invité chez ses amis Clive et Vanessa Bell. Vanessa n’est autre que la, fille du deuxième époux de Julia Duckworth, nièce de Julia Margaret Cameron et si souvent photographiée par cette dernière. Chez les Clive de nombreuses épreuves de Julia Margaret Cameron ornent l’entrée de leur appartement. Une amitié profonde lie André Derain et Clive Bell qui fait de nombreux séjours à Paris dans les années 20 et qui lui rend souvent visite dans son atelier de la rue Bonaparte. Dans l’œuvre du peintre on retrouve un tableau peint en 1919 représentant Julia Duckworth ‘Portrait of an Englishwoman’ réalisé d’après une épreuve de Julia Margaret Cameron de 1872. Le tableau se trouve actuellement au Carnegie Museum of Art à Pittsburg.

Clive’s apartment was decorated at the entrance with many prints by Julia Margaret Cameron. A deep friendship bound André Derain and Clive Bell, who made several trips to Paris during the 1920s and would often visit Derain in his studio on rue Bonaparte. The painter’s oeuvre includes a picture painted in 1919 depicting Julia Duckworth, Portrait of an Englishwoman, based on a photograph taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1872. This picture is currently kept at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
