Further Details
Greubel Forsey are fabled for their exceptional and avant-garde horology, combining highly complicated mechanical functions with uncompromisingly provocative styling concepts.

The Greubel Forsey Art Piece 2 Edition 2 was launched at SIHH 2017. It continues the path established by previous Art Piece watches only with a “sportier” look and without the microscopic sculpture that has been an integral feature of the series until now. The most fascinating aspect of the Art Piece 2 is that the time functions of hours and minutes are hidden so that only the pulsating angled tourbillon and giant-size power reserve indication are visible, the full glory of the mechanism and its artistry can then be appreciated without distraction.

The time is read from the sector “dial” with concealed aperture offset in the lower half of the dial. The aperture is opened and closed with the pusher below the crown, the time is then displayed on discs and indicated by the red triangles.

Housed in an impressive but easy to wear 44 mm. diameter 18k white gold case, the sapphire crystal glazed case back allows another view of the compelling Greubel Forsey 30 degree angled double tourbillon. The exterior tourbillon revolves in a four-minute period, the interior tourbillon, smaller in size and inclined at 30 degrees in relation to the first cage, revolves in 60 seconds. This revolutionary complication permanently compensates the rate of gravity-related errors in all positions. The finishing of the hand-wound movement and frosted bridges is of the very highest standard as expected from Greubel Forsey. The back plate features the founders’ signatures in relief by “galvanic growth.” Two barrels provide power with a 72-hour reserve.

To the best of our knowledge the present watch is the first example of an Art Piece 2 Edition 2 to be offered at auction. It offers the discerning devotee of haute horology the chance to obtain one of the most admired and discussed wristwatches of recent years.

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have become legends in the world of modern independent watchmaking, the timepiece offered here is the perfect encapsulation of their success.

Working together since 1992, when they were developing complicated movements for Renaud & Papi, Greubel and Forsey decided to branch out on their own in 1999, setting up as the independents, CompliTime Greubel, la Neuveville and Bureau d’Etude et Prototypy, le Locle, respectively. From this moment forward, they are focused on designing a new generation of tourbillons specifically developed to improve the timekeeping of the mechanical watch.
