Charlotte Young, Specialist Head of Sale, Private and Iconic Collections commented: “Christie’s is proud to have been entrusted with ‘The Collection of the late Lord and Lady Swaythling’ and is thrilled with the strong prices and overall result of the sale which are a testament to the illustrious collectors and their respective collections amassed over multiple generations. The market showed great enthusiasm across all categories from jewellery to Chinese works of art and English painted enamels, reflecting the appetite for works with great provenance, many of which have been unseen in public for many decades, if ever.  It was particularly pleasing to see such strong results for the group of Goldsmid family portraits by Arthur William Devis, inherited from Lord Swaythling’s paternal grandmother, where the group portrait of Benjamin Goldsmid’s children doubled its low estimate to achieve £201,600. There was competitive bidding for the vibrant group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, which were led by Francis Picabia’s Notre-Dame, effet de soleil, 1906 which sold for £516,600.”
