Peter Brown and Harriet Drummond, International Heads of the department, and Brandon Lindberg, Head of Sale, commented: “Following the record-breaking June sale, Pre-Raphaelite imagery continues to attract strong competitive bidding internationally. The sculpture section was led by Sir Alfred Gilbert’s ‘Saint George’, which achieved a new world record price for the artist at auction, doubling its pre-sale estimate. We are particularly pleased with the excellent prices achieved for ‘Wings of the Morning’ by Edward Robert Hughes, which secured a second highest price at auction for the artist, and the leading lot of the sale, John William Waterhouse’s ‘Juliet’, which exceeded its high estimate. We look forward to the next King Street sale of ‘Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art’ on 16 June 2015.” |
