New York – Christie’s is pleased to announce highlights of a sale of Important American Furniture, Outsider and Folk Art taking place on September 24, 2015, in its New York Rockefeller Center galleries. Drawing from several prominent Americana collections, the sale presents an opportunity to purchase rare pieces of American furniture, paintings by Gilbert Stuart and Thomas P. Moses, pieces of decorative and folk art, and works created by highly sought-after outsider artists, including Henry Darger and William Edmondson. The 117 lots will be on view in Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries September 19 – 23, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (1 – 5 p.m. on Sunday).

• This Portrait of George Washington is based on the “Athenaeum” portrait that Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) painted from a live sitting with the President in 1796, which is now owned jointly by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Along with the Hamilton bust, listed below, it is one of 25 lots from Credit Suisse’s Americana Collection. (est. $200,000 - $300,000)
• From the collection of Eric Martin Wunsch, a mahogany and veneer work table made circa 1805-1812 by the renowned Seymour shop of Boston displays exquisite design, masterful craftsmanship and remarkable condition. (est. $50,000-$80,000)
• Painted in 1875, The Schooner Charles Carroll on the Piscataqua from the North End of Noble's Bridge, Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a late-career masterpiece by Thomas P. Moses (1808-1881). (est. $300,000-500,000)
• From the Collection of Larry and Gail Freels are six examples of carousel animals, including a circa 1912 horse attributed to Daniel Müller (1872-1951), one of the most innovative of American carousel carvers. (est. $30,000-$50,000)
• Among the 20 works of Outsider Art in this sale, a double-sided watercolor and collage work, Watch where you are going kid you’ll run smack into those phanto flowers, by Henry Darger (1892-1973), was likely painted later in his life, judging from its size, complexity and bright colors. (est. $400,000-600,000). Another Outsider Art highlight is Nurse Wootton, by Tennessee sculptor William Edmondson (1874-1951). (est. $50,000 – $150,000)
• The 1867 marble Portrait bust of Alexander Hamilton by Horatio Stone (1808-1875) is a great find for fans of the Broadway musical, Hamilton. Stone’s full-length statue of Hamilton, finished the year after this bust, has been in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C., since 1900. (est. $5,000 - $8,000)
