RELEASE | Handbags x Hype featuring a Collection of Supreme Skateboards & Accessories

Jewellery, Watches & Handbags
New York Americas 19 November 2019

FROM Hermès TO HYPE

The largest collection of Supreme offered at Christie’s

PRESENTED ALONGSIDE LIMITED-EDITION HANDBAGS & ACCESSORIES

New York – Christie’s New York announces Handbags X HYPE, featuring a Collection of SUPREME Skateboards & Accessories, which will include the largest selection of Supreme ever offered at Christie’s. The collection of Supreme is presented alongside the most comprehensive selection of limited-edition handbags ever presented at auction spanning custom ‘horseshoe’ Hermès, runway pieces by Chanel, artist collaboration pieces, and more. The online sale will be open for bidding from November 26 to December 10.

Working alongside consignor Ibrahim Itani, founder of Plus, the Canadian streetwear superstore, and expert Byron Hawes, Christie’s has pulled together a curated selection of the rarest and most covetable collaboration pieces ever produced by Supreme.

The collection begins with the Copyright Boards, the very first set made by Supreme in 1998, and continues to present day with 230 individual skateboards, nearly every design produced by the brand. With a limited production run for the earliest decks, these iterations are extremely rare and collectible. Over the past 21 years, Supreme has collaborated with the most celebrated contemporary artists to use skateboards as a canvas. The Christie’s sale features the most iconic of these artist-boards including full sets by John Baldessari, George Condo, Damien Hirst, KAWS, Jeff Koons, Ryan McGuiness, Marilyn Minter, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Peter Saville, and Christopher Wool, to name a few.

Complementing the extensive offering of limited edition skateboards is a selection of the most important and collectible accessories Supreme has ever produced, from the Stern Pinball Machine ($30,000-50,000) and Coleman Mini Bike ($3,000-5,000) to the Fender Guitar ($2,000-3,000) and Louis Vuitton Monogram Malle Courrier 90 Trunk. ($50,000-60,000).

Bryon Hawes, author of DROP and the upcoming book, Art on Deck: An Exploration of Supreme Skateboards, explains, “Supreme represents a highly crafted collaborative vision of broader culture. Like Warhol’s Brillo Pad 'box', these objects are pop art iconographs. The skate decks retain this spirit with the added layer of being physically emblazoned by some of this century's most illustrious artists. Supreme has always managed to meld a range of influences. The curation of this sale with Christie’s is very much in keeping with that as the selection we chose presents the essence of Supreme at the cross-section of contemporary art, design, and collectible accessories.”

The collection of Supreme is offered within the Handbags & Accessories sale during Luxury Week New York. Alongside Supreme, the sale presents extremely rare handbags by Hermès such as a matte white Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin 30 with palladium hardware ($40,000-60,000); a limited edition black calfbox leather So Black Birkin 35 with black PVC hardware ($12,000-15,000); and a Rose Azalea Swift Leather Quelle Idole with palladium hardware. Also featured are runway pieces by Chanel including a limited-edition Leather Record Clutch from Spring/Summer 2004 ($3,000-4,000); a dark pink patent Leather Milk Carton Bag ($2,000-3,000)

Caitlin Donovan, Head of Sale for Handbags & Accessories, remarks, “This highly-curated sale marks Christie’s entry into a new collecting category that merges the world of luxury with contemporary art. Working together with Ibrahim and Byron, we hand-selected an offering that represents the ‘most supreme’ Supreme. It has been exciting organizing this sale to include these covetable objects alongside some of the rarest ‘horseshoe’ and limited-edition Hermès bags we have ever presented. This auction captures luxury as it is defined today—from heritage brands to hype.”
