Christie's Results: Snowdon - A Life in Art and Objects
London - Christie’s announces the results of the online auction Snowdon: A Life in Art and Objects, a striking private collection sale of 143 lots representing English and European furniture, porcelain, silver, books, Old Master Drawings, Chinese works of art, modern British art, Australian and Canadian paintings, and photography. The collection included works relating to Lord Snowdon’s creative practice during his lifetime, notably two Prince of Wales investiture chairs designed by Lord Snowdon and his portrait of David Hockney.
The sale received competitive bidding from over twenty countries globally, a lasting legacy to Lord Snowdon’s acclaim both in the United Kingdom and overseas.
The lots relating to his uncle, Oliver Messel, the celebrated English theatre and stage designer, performed beyond expectations setting a world record for Messel. A beautiful Cecil Beaton album compiled by Beaton, his sister Barbara Beaton and others for Oggie Lynn, also performing well above its pre-sale estimate.
Benedict Winter, Head of Sale comments, ‘The successful sale is a testimony to the memory and esteem to which Lord Snowdon is held and the intrigue of this highly personal and well-regarded collection.
