New York – Christie’s is pleased to present The Collector: English & European Furniture, Ceramics, Silver & Works of Art from 23 March-7 & 8 April, offering a curated selection of fine European and English furniture and works of art, ceramics, silver and Chinese works of Art spanning from the 17th to 20th centuries. The online auction features an interactive Viewing Room of original watercolor vignettes depicting auction highlights from the imaginative and adventurous illustrator Riley Sheehey. Each playful mise-en-scène brings dynamic context and fresh perspective to the sale offerings, while embracing the auction’s digital platform.
The sale offers more than 300 lots and includes several prominent collections of English furniture featuring iconic makers such as Gillows, Coxed and Woster, and John Linnell. Highlights include a core group of George II solid mahogany seating furniture, Neoclassic designs of the Regency period and scarlet and black gilt-japanned cabinets from The Barbara Allen de Kwiatkowski Collection.
Traveling to the Continent, we find a diverse assortment of Louis XV and Louis XVI ormolu objects including sets of wall lights and a mantel clock after the emblematic design by François Vion, as well as a curated selection of furniture such as a pair of Louis XVI marquises delivered for Charles Alexandre de Calonne, Louis XVI’s famous finance minister, at Versailles. Among the silver and ceramics offerings, highlights include works by the pre-eminent silversmiths Georg Jensen and Puiforcat, and important pâte-sur-pâte vases by Léopold-Jules-Joseph Gély and Louis Solon while working at the Sèvres and Minton factories, respectively.
