Paul van den Biesen, Head of Sale, European Noble & Private Collections:

“The strong prices realised throughout the sale of works from this private collection are a testament to the connoisseurship of Ana Maria Espírito Santo Bustorff Silva’s father Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva, one of the most significant patrons of the arts in Portugal. This collection presented the market with the last consistent nucleus of Ricardo’s original collection of French, Chinese, Italian and English pieces, which Ana Maria cherished until she passed away in April 2014. International collectors competed fiercely to acquire the most notable works from one of Portugal’s most sophisticated family collections, with particularly stellar prices realised for the group of four ornithological paintings (lot 28), the very rare Chinese famille rose armorial punch bowl (lot 38) and the Pillement pastels (lot 70), as well as the three lots of furniture by Francesco Abbiati (lot 115-117), which all far exceeded their pre-sale estimates. We now look forward to the sale of European Noble & Private Collections in South Kensington on 30 April.
