QUETZALCOATL : SERPENT À PLUMES

Quetzalcoatl, The Feathered Serpent, a superb ensemble of 39 Mesoamerican and Andean works  from a notable European collection will go on sale on 9 February at Christie’s Paris.  Many pieces possess an extensive publication and exhibition history of over forty years. The Quetzalcoatl Collection captures through stone and ceramics the mythical cosmologies, world views and philosophies of the ancient cultures of the New World. Further 19 lots in the auction formed part of the prestigious Belgian collection of Walter Van DenAvenne. While an abstract group of six Valdivia stone steles were assembled by the late Gerard Geiger of Lausanne.

Undisputed highlights of the auction are an impressive Teotihuacan Serpentine mask, dating from circa A. D. 450-650, which was part of the collection of Pierre Matisse (1900-1989), youngest son of the famous painter Henri Matisse, for over 50 years and a majestic Veracruz Sculpture of Cihuateotl, the revered Goddess of Fertility from the Van DenAvenne Collection.
