Morgan Osthimer, Head of Works on Paper, Impressionist and Modern Art, comments: “With a strong sell-through rate, particularly for the more than 40 Cubist works from the Melamed Family Collection, the Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper sale demonstrated a strong appetite among collectors worldwide for works by the best-known artists at every price level. A Paul Klee watercolor, “Dunenfriedhof” from 1924, brought the highest price at $749,000, but one of the strongest performers was a Louis Marcoussis Cubist work, “Le Rire,” from the Melamed Family Collection, which fetched $233,000, nearly quadrupling its presale estimate and setting a new record for the artist at auction for a work on paper.”
