Christie’s and CORE announce a new partnership devoted to raising critical funds for those affected by the devastating humanitarian crisis brought on by war in Ukraine.

New York | May 2022

Following a successful partnership in May 2021 May 2021, Christie’s and CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), are pleased to announce a new partnership devoted to raising critical funds for CORE’s relief efforts worldwide, including supporting those affected by the devastating humanitarian crisis brought on by war in Ukraine. Two works will be sold in Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale on 13 May to benefit CORE. Leonardo DiCaprio has generously donated a work by Kenny Scharf and Gina Beavers, courtesy of Marianne Boesky, has generously donated a work of her own.

CORE, founded by Sean Penn and Ann Lee, is a crisis response organization dedicated to empowering communities in and beyond crisis. In rapid response to the immense humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, CORE has been providing crucial support to refugees in Poland and Romania, distributing essential resources, providing cash assistance, and supporting makeshift shelters.

With an ethos of “getting things done” for marginalized and vulnerable communities, CORE continues to respond to emerging crises, from destructive floods and landslides in Brazil and Hurricane Ida in New Orleans, to the recent earthquake in Haiti and the border crisis in Del Rio, Texas. Since March 2020, CORE has been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing equitable access to life-saving resources to underserved populations in the U.S. and worldwide, including 6.3 million free tests and 2.7 million vaccines. Throughout the years, CORE has received overwhelming support from the art world, and through its partnership with Christie's, has been able to raise over 4 million dollars in auctions to support programs in Haiti, The Bahamas, the United States, and Puerto Rico.

The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is one of the most heartbreaking moments in our lifetimes and an emergency for the world at large. It is a crucial moment for us not only to support the resilient people of Ukraine but for humanity itself. We are extremely grateful to Christie’s and the artists who have donated their work towards CORE’s critical efforts worldwide, including the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, to allow us to continue to support those who need it most in their greatest hour of need and beyond.

— Sean Penn, Co-Founder of CORE
