Asian Art at Christie’s London
achieves a combined sales total of £11,891,875

Asian Art at Christie’s London achieved a combined sales total of £11,891,875 on 14 May over three auctions. Our King Street saleroom welcomed collectors from across the globe, with bidders participating online and on the telephone.

The day was marked by the triumphant result for a very rare and magnificent imperial ‘nine dragon’ lacquer throne from the Qianlong period (1736–95) of Qing dynasty. The exquisitely carved, three-colour seat realised £6,108,250, quintupling its pre-sale high estimate and fetching the top price of all three sales.

Buddhist art was under the spotlight. The top lot of our Important Chinese Jades from the Dizang Studio sale was a rare and finely carved white jade figure of Guanyin and spinach-green jade ‘lotus’ stand, selling for £43,750. A magnificent gilt-bronze seated figure of Bodhisattva headlined our Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art auction reached £731,250 against a pre-sale high estimate of £500,000.

Other highlights included Qi Baishi’s Lotus, which soared past its pre-sale high estimate of £80,000 to realise £175,000 and an impressive 18th century green jade recumbent horse sold for £118,750.

Following the success in London, we invite you to explore other exceptional pieces on offer during the Hong Kong spring auctions from 24–29 May, or online from 6–13 June at our Pavilion Online: Chinese Art sale.
