A note from the Executive Director

‘Free, democratic access to great art is invaluable. Over the past year and a half, public art has celebrated the power of the artistic imagination to inspire us, reflecting our aspirations, diversity, and values as a society. We are thrilled to partner with Christie's, and profoundly grateful to artists Huma Bhabha, Marley Freeman, Danielle Orchard, and Ugo Rondinone. They have generously donated magnificent works of art to support Public Art Fund's mission to bring the experience of extraordinary contemporary art to all, for free, every day.’

About the organisation

Public Art Fund

As the leader in its field, Public Art Fund brings dynamic contemporary art to a broad audience in New York City and beyond by mounting ambitious free exhibitions of international scope and impact that offer the public powerful experiences with art and the urban environment.

Since its inception, Public Art Fund has presented more than 500 artists’ exhibitions and projects at sites throughout New York City’s five boroughs, making it possible for artists to engage diverse audiences and, along the way, redefine public art in relation to the changing nature of contemporary art.

A note from Public Art Fund

Since 1977, Public Art Fund has presented more than 500 exhibitions by the world’s most compelling artists to broad audiences in New York City’s five boroughs and beyond. These dynamic free exhibitions—available for all to experience 24 hours a day, seven days a week—enhance our urban environment and offer the public access to powerful works of contemporary art without barriers like the cost of admission.

Early groundbreaking projects include Messages to the Public (1982-1990), an exhibition series that ran on an 800-square foot animated light board in Times Square and featured more than 70 artists, among them Guerrilla Girls, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, and Alfredo Jaar. More recently, we have presented iconic exhibitions including Ai Weiwei: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors (2017), Tauba Auerbach: Flow Separation (2018), Pope.L: Conquest (2019), Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales (2019), and have worked with dozens of emerging artists to realize new works that extend their practice into new realms. We have also developed permanent art programs for essential new infrastructure projects including LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B (2020) and Moynihan Train Hall (2020) with artists including Elmgreen & Dragset, Laura Owens, Sarah Sze, and Kehinde Wiley.

At Public Art Fund, we believe in free access to great contemporary art for all, that artists are an essential part of our civic dialogue, and that art has the power to ignite conversation among different people, to open hearts and minds, and to help shape our collective future. We’re proud that the proceeds of this sale will both support Public Art Fund’s mission and the extraordinarily talented and generous artists who donated artworks.
