Sophia Zhou is a Specialist in the Chinese Paintings department in New York. Since joining Christie’s in 2014, Sophia works closely with collectors, institutions and estates across the United States to appraise and advise on acquisitions of Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Sophia began her career with Christie’s in Hong Kong. A key essay writer in both English and Chinese, she contributed to the record-breaking sales of Fu Baoshi’s Song of the Pipa Player (HK$204,850,000 / US$26,370,948) in 2017 and Temple at the Mountain Peak by Zhang Daqian (HK$209,100,000 / US$27,062,468) in 2021. Sophia was also instrumental in the landmark sale of Wood and Rock by Su Shi in 2018 which achieved HK$463,600,000 / US$59,505,898, the most expensive object ever sold by Christie’s in Asia. Since relocating to New York in 2020, Sophia has brought to market the personal collection of Zhang Xinjia, the niece of Zhang Daqian, and the esteemed Ye Gongchuo Family Collection.
Sophia holds a B.A. in History of Art with First-Class Honours from University College London and an M.A. in History of Art with Distinction from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, with a concentration on post-war European and Chinese art history. Sophia is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
