Vincent van Gogh paintings

Vincent van Gogh’s paintings are characterised by expressive brushwork, bold colour contrasts and a sense of emotional intensity. Heavily influenced by Impressionism and Japanese prints, his work evolved from dark, earth-toned scenes of peasant life to the vibrant, impassioned compositions of his later years. Iconic works such as The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Wheatfield with Crows exemplify his ability to convey movement and atmosphere through dynamic, swirling strokes of paint. Van Gogh’s technique of layering thick impasto created a tangible sense of depth and energy. Though largely unrecognised during his lifetime, his paintings are now regarded as some of the most significant in Western art.
