Christie’s European Art sale offers a curated selection of works from one of the most diverse and revolutionary eras in the history of art. Spanning from the years following the French Revolution into the early 20th century’s Art Nouveau style, the category encompasses nearly 90,000 artists from the who represent the many movements of the era. From the landscapes of the Barbizon painters to the bustling cities of the Belle Époque, the sale also includes works from the Victorian, Dutch, German, French and Academic schools, among others. All of the elegance and transformation to modernity that the 19th century embodies is captured in the paintings, drawings and sculptures presented in this sale.

A special selection of paintings celebrating the 200th anniversary of Rosa Bonheur’s birth is included, leading a particularly strong Barbizon section. The sale also includes two studies for murals designed for Rockefeller Center by Frank Brangwyn, and a large group of paintings depicting Venice offered at a variety of price points. Highlights include works by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Rudolf von Alt, Cornelis Springer, Jean-François Raffaëlli, Félix Ziem, Isaac Israëls and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, among others. A large painting by Gyula Tornai painted during the artist’s travels in Japan is another highlight.
