After studying at the Royal Academy, Chalon had a great deal of success as an animal painter and married the painter James Ward's sister. In 1795, Chalon was appointed Animal Painter to Frederica, Duchess of York and later to the Prince Regent (later Geroge IV) and William IV. He exhibited over 100 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1792 to 1847.

Robert Bower of Welham Park, Yorkshire was a Major in the East Riding Local Militia and Deputy Lieutenant of the East Riding. In addition to this painting, Chalon painted a large hunting picture (52 x 66 in.) of the Bower family in 1824 depicting the Rev. George Bower, the Rev. John Bower, Robert Bower of Welham, and Robert Bower, Jr. (exhibited at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston, British Sporting Painting Exhibition, 1943, no. 29 from the collection of Viscountess Monckton of Brenchley).
