Bred in 1829 and owned by the Marquess of Exeter, Galata by Sultan out of Advance by Pioneer was one of the best fillies of her generation, winning eight races in eleven starts. At three in 1832, she won the 1,000 Gunineas at Newmarket easily and the Oaks at Epsom by two lengths as well as the Windsor Forest Stakes at Ascot. At four, she won the Port Stakes at Newmarket and the Gold Cup at Ascot.
Trained by Job Marson, Galata fretted badly, carried no flesh, and was always worked alone. In races, due to her great speed, she was able to take the lead but would quit running if another horse came along side and collared her. She produced nine foals and died in 1848.
