Lot Essay

The seal on this painting, Guan, is also the name the artist gave to his country retreat. The small house, located near this gorge at Mitake, Okutama, at the western edge of Tokyo, provided Gyokudo a place to work removed from the cares of daily life. For other paintings of this subject see Kawai Gyokudo seitan hyakunen ten (Kawai Gyokudo Centennial exhibition), exh. cat. (Tokyo: Asahi Shimbunsha, 1973), nos. 62 and 64.
