Lot Essay

Modigliani met Constantin Brancusi in Paris in 1909 and his nascent in sculpture received great encouragement from the Rumanian and this became Modigliani's major preoccupation until 1914 when his poor health dictated that he pursue the less physically arduous medium of painting. For two years the artists lived next door to each other and Brancusi taught Modigliani the basic technique of stone carving. Consequently many of Modigliani's works on paper from this period explore the caryatid theme. This drawing articulates Modigliani's devotion to sculpture and reveals his debt to Brancusi.
