Lot Essay

Having received an invitation from Serge Diaghilev to come to Paris to design costumes and sets for his Ballets Russes (ie. Le Coq d'or, 1914 and Les Contes russes, 1917), the present work coincides with Goncharova's recent arrival to the City of Light. A period of intense activity and revolutionary achievements across the artistic spectrum, Rayonnisme dates to Goncharova's most productive creative period. While Goncharova never lost sight of the folk traditions of her Russian homeland, her exposure to Cubist and Futurist experiments paved the way toward her own evolving stylistic development. With a strong accent on expressive colourism and fundamental abstraction, Goncharova was soon to develop her own unique Rayonist idiom even independent from Larionov.
