This picture relates to a composition by Tillemans, three variants of which are listed by Robert Raines in 'Peter Tillemans, Life and Work', Walpole Society, LXVII, 1980, p. 50, nos. 36-38. Two of the pictures listed by Raines have a slightly lower perspective and omit the tree to the left.

Evelyn Pierrepont was created 1st Duke of Kingston upon Hull in 1715. He was described in 1705 by the writer and spy John Macky in 'Memoirs of the Secret Service' as a 'very fine gentleman, of good sense, well-bred, and a lover of the ladies; intirely [sic] in the interest of his country; makes a good figure, is of a black complexion, well made'.

Thoresby Hall was remodelled on the orders of Evelyn's older brother William Pierrepont, between 1685 and 1687, by the eminent architect and collector William Talman. Its history was complicated by a fire as soon as it was finished; having been rebuilt for a second time it was finally destroyed by fire in 1745. John Carr of York rebuilt it in 1762, and this in turn was replaced by the present house by Salvin in 1864.
