Lot Essay

This picture is after Landseer's work of 1832, which is also called Hawking in the Olden Time (Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood, London). Of the latter, Ormond (op.cit.) comments 'This, the first of Landseer's major hawking subjects, is a work of unusual design and powerful effect. The contrast between the birds in the foreground and the immensity of the skyscape is visually dramatic. Like Chevy Chase, the work is also a history painting, intended to evoke the chivalric and romantic past'.
