Lot Essay

The Lime Kilns are gallops to the east of Newmarket. A painting by the same artist A trial, the Lime Kilns, is illustrated in R.C. Lyle, Royal Newmarket, London, 1945, opposite p. 28.

Lionel Edwards was one of the most popular illustrators of hunting and sporting subjects of the 20th Century. A keen horseman himself, he spent much of his life hunting and many of his pictures were worked up from sketches made on the spot. Edwards also illustrated and published many books and painted a series of named hunts which were produced as a limited edition of prints. Working in both watercolour and oil, his works are greatly admired for their sensitivity and spontaneity.
