by the State Porcelain Factory, with gilt hammer, sickle and cog mark, signed in Cyrillic A. Shchekotikhina
Shaped circular, The Sailor's Walk, 'Celebrating 1 May 1921 in the City of Petrograd' inscribed in black around the rim, the whole plate painted with the scene of a sailor of the Baltic Fleet with his wife, the old Stock Exchange in the distance with boats and fireworks in the water between, signed lower left and marked on base

Lot Essay

Several versions of this design by Alexandra Schchekotikhina-Pototskaya, are known to exist. A smaller example, as a dish, appears in N. Lobanov-Rostovsky, op. cit, p. 58, no. 37, dated 1921, painted by Maria P. Kirilova, in which the fireworks are more like small suns and the girl carries an umbrella in her left hand. The sailor in all known versions has a hammer and sickle tatooed on his throat, but not the heart and arrow or the wedding ring on the woman's hand as in the present example. Another example, as a plate, also signed by the artist and dated 1921, is in the Lomonosov Porcelain Museum, St. Petersburg (MZ-S-3349), in which the Stock Exchange, fireworks and the word 'celebrating' are excluded.
