Lot Essay

The present work dates from when Maud Earl had moved to the States. Although it was painted in 1917 after she had begun a phase of Oriental inspired paintings, it is consistent with her second stylistic period from 1900 to 1915 in which her brushwork was looser and she exhibited a freer handling of paint.
