Lot Essay

In April 1918 Munnings was attached to the Canadian Cavalry Brigade which was under the command of General Seely, who later became Lord Mottistone. He then moved on to join the Forestry Corps, enjoying his time spent with the soldiers and their horses, recording their activities as artist-reporter. The forty-five pictures produced as a result of this trip were shown in the Canadian War Records Exhibition in early 1919 at the Royal Academy. The bonhomie he shared with the troops is evident in the present work, a sketch executed on a printed menu and dated 24 May 1918.
