Lot Essay

Three Mile House and the wide expanse of the Bure Valley Marshes provided inspiration early on in the artist's career. The family home was about a mile distant across these marshes and the artist moved there at the age of twelve. The artist was a frequent visitor to the house in the 1950s and 1960s, which had previuosly attracted the painter and naturalist Sir Peter Scott in the late 1930s.
