Lot Essay

Painted by an unidentified follower of the great Venetian master Giovanni Bellini, the present small, half-length Madonna was originally intended as a private devotional object, for which there was a substantial and growing market during Bellini's lifetime. The figure of the Madonna is derived from his famous San Zaccaria Altarpiece (Church of San Zaccaria, Venice), though the gaze of the Child differs in direction. The tonality reflects the paintings of Bellini's final decade.
