Lot Essay

These excellently preserved capricci port scenes are fine examples of Ferg's ability as a painter of landscapes. The attention to detail, the multitude of figures, and the sense of depth and distance are reminiscent of the work of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. Combining landscapes with genre scenes is particularly characteristic of early eighteenth Century Austrian painting, and here the influence of Dutch, Flemish and Italian models clearly prevail.
