Lot Essay

Sterling Turner was the son of Ross Turner, a fellow artist and friend of Childe Hassam. Hassam executed four known pastels of children in the 1890s including the present work. The others are: Little Girl with Pear (circa 1889-93, The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts), Portrait of Elizabeth Wolcott Tuckerman (1892, private collection), and Portrait of Katherine Thaxter (1893, private collection).

This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
