Lot Essay

Modeled circa 1924, The Horse Wrangler, also known as Night Herder, was originally meant to be a self-portrait of the artist with his horse, Red Bird. Dissatisfied with the likeness, Russell changed it to an anonymous cowpuncher.

Other examples of the work cast by the Roman Bronze Works are in the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Bradford Brinton Museum, Big Horn, Wyoming; Museum of Western Art, Denver, Colorado; R.W. Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, Louisiana; Montana Historical Society, Helena, Montana; and Spencer Museum of Art, Kansas City, Kansas.

Ginger Renner has confirmed the authenticity of this lot.
