Lot Essay

Foaled in 1769, Chrysis was a grey filly by Careless. She was owned by Evelyn Pierrepont, 2nd Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull; his coronet and initials appear on the rug, and the jockey is shown wearing his crimson silks. She was a high class racehorse, winning the Clermont Cup at Newmarket in 1772, worth 400 guineas and a 125 guinea cup.
