Lot Essay

As a young artist, the commissions from Bullard's Brewery Company for their yearly calendar design, came in extremely useful. The designs often featured a Georgian landlord in a long red waist-coat, mug in hand. In 1899 Munnings sent three such designs to the Poster Academy in Crystal Palace and won the Gold Medal for an illustration showing the landlord sitting at the same seat and table as in the present work, playing a cello (see A.J. Munnings, An Artist's Life, Bungay, 1950, illustrated opposite p. 81).
