Lot Essay

By 1912, when this work was painted, Munnings had proven himself to be a competent painter but he had yet to be tested in the London artistic arena. The following year, at the Leicester Galleries in London, his success was heralded. Norman Garstin reviewed this exhibition in the International Studio magazine (June 1913) and proclaimed, 'For Mr. Munnings, while knowing his horse well ... knows also the far subtler matter, the relation it is bearing to all the varying, changing moodiness of the atmosphere; to him it is not merely the horse but the horse in his environment that matters - there is the poetry and the harmony'.

Munnings chose to exhibit a similar image of one of his brown mares at pasture, probably executed around the same time, Hunter at Grass, 1912, at the Retrospective Exhibition held at the Royal Academy in 1956, no. 65, illustrated in the catalogue p. 9.

The present work will be included in the catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings being prepared by Lorian Peralta-Ramos.
