Lot Essay

Herring painted several versions of this subject. In 1842 an engraving by H.B. Hall was published after the artist's painting of horses drinking in the collection of Sir Benjamin Smith, and was entitled 'The Watering Place'. It proved a popular subject and Herring went on to exhibit versions of the scene at the Society of British Artists in 1844 and 1850, the British Institution in 1852, and at the Portland Gallery in 1857 and 1859.
