Lot Essay

"When I think of art I think of beauty. Beauty is the mystery of life. It is not in the eye it is in the mind. In our minds there is awareness of perfection." Agnes Martin, 1989

Untitled #15 is a sublime example of Agnes Martin's work from this period, painted when she was still working on her larger size format of 72 x 72 inches. With a subtle touch, the artist has painted varying bands that vary only slightly in color, much like Ad Reinhardt's black paintings. What appears to be a white monochrome field in Untitled #15 reveals hints of blues, yellows and peach with extended viewing, an effect that is difficult to capture in photographs yet is at the heart of the artist's practice.
