Lot Essay

Feiler was born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, and came to England in 1933. He studied at the Slade School, London, (1936-9), where fellow students included Patrick Heron, Adrian Heath and Bryan Wynter, before he was interned during World War II and sent to Canada. On his return he taught at Radley and Eastbourne colleges and then at the West of England College of Art from 1946, becoming Head of Painting (1963-75).

In 1949 Feiler visited Cornwall for the first time and four years later he decided to move there permanently, settling in Stanhope Forbes' old studio in Kerris, near Newlyn. The Cornish landscape was critical to Feiler's paintings during this period, as he painted in response to the forms and light around him. A similar tonal composition to the present work can be seen in Vertical Reflection, Blue, 1964, (Tate Gallery, London).
