The Sofa

In the late 1920s David Jones had established his reputation as a watercolour painter. He worked at his home in Brockley, in Ditchling in Sussex, and his South Wales home Capel-y-ffin. He also worked at Caldy Island, Eric Gill's home in Northumberland. His palette during this time was muted, and as with The Sofa, he used pencil with a little colour. He was interested in pattern and design, and this is evident in his depiction of the sofa in the present lot in which the pencil design on the sofa is carefully and delicately rendered.
