Lot Essay

David Jones painted interior views through an open window on various occasions in 1932. The British Council's Curtained Outlook portrays an open window with a vase of flowers on the window ledge. In the present work Jones paints a similar composition and view, adding a glass and pair of scissors into the picture. Both works show domestic interiors in a lively and dynamic manner. Curtained Outlook was painted at Piggots, Eric Gill's home on Caldy Island in Northumberland, and it is possible that the present lot also shows the interior of that house.
